Client Case Study 1

Case Study: Overcoming Binge Eating and Building Healthy Habits After Bereavement

At Breakthrough Coaching, I have the privilege of working with clients who are facing a variety of challenges. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the profound changes that can occur in just a single session. This case study highlights the journey of one of my clients, who transformed her life after struggling with binge eating following a bereavement.

The Challenge: Binge Eating and Emotional Struggles

After experiencing a significant bereavement, my client found herself turning to sugary foods as a coping mechanism. This led to weight gain, a general feeling of lethargy, and a lack of motivation. Additionally, she has an intolerance to high sugar intake, which was causing her skin to break out, further impacting her self-esteem and confidence, particularly as she would find herself picking at her skin which resulted in her feeling even more self conscious.

During our initial consultation, she revealed that her habit of eating sweets was deeply rooted in her childhood, making it a well-established and ingrained coping mechanism. She felt trapped in a cycle of self-sabotage, particularly when it came to her appearance, including behaviours like skin picking as a neurodivergent stimming behaviour.

The Solution: Hypnotherapy and NLP

During the her initial consultation, as with all of my client consultations, I gathered a large amount of information about my client. Due to what she told me about her experiences, as well as subtle observations I am able to make which allow me to very specifically tailor my approach for the appointment in order to get the maximum results, as quickly as possible, for my clients.

In just one appointment, I tackled her damaging eating habits using hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). The whole appointment took less than one hour and was conducted via Zoom. It was tailored to address her specific needs, focusing not only on her binge eating but also on more general self-sabotaging behaviours such as the skin picking. By resetting, rather than replacing her habits, we allowed her brain to find healthier ways to meet her positive intentions. This allowed her to cope and better manage her grief in the present, as well as giving her healthier coping strategies and habits for the future.

The Results: Immediate and Long-Lasting Change

The results were immediate and impressive. Despite continuing to navigate the difficult period of bereavement and other life stressors, she reported significant improvements. She has kept in touch to update me on her progress and has reported that since our session, she has only eaten a few sweets and some cake on two occasions, both for special social events rather than as a coping mechanism.

I reassured her that enjoying sweet treats in moderation is perfectly healthy, and that a balanced diet doesn’t mean she has to give up all her favourite foods. This shift in perspective has helped her gain and maintain a healthy relationship with food.

Not only has she lost the weight she had gained, but she is also making food choices that are far healthier than those she would have made before the bereavement. Her increased energy and motivation have led to a much more enjoyable and active lifestyle, including taking her dog on longer walks, which she now looks forward to doing everyday, regardless of the UK weather, when before this would have felt like a chore.

The Impact: Improved Self-Confidence and Well-Being

One of the most significant changes has been in her self-confidence. By addressing both her eating habits and her self-sabotaging behaviours, we were able to improve her self-esteem dramatically. She feels better about her appearance and has a more positive outlook on life, particularly as she has now gained new, healthier coping strategies. Now, she feels confident that whatever life throws at her, she will be able to deal with it, without resorting to binge eating or any other destructive behaviours.

This case study highlights the power of hypnotherapy and NLP in making lasting changes. It shows that no matter how long-established a habit or behaviour may be, it can be reset to align with your true intentions and goals.
